Queen of Spices:

Cardamom

 

Fun Fact:  Cardamom originated in the tropical parts of India, Nepal, and South Asia; it has been traded in those regions for over a thousand years.

Fun Fact II:  In ancient medical traditions, cardamom was used to cure soar throats, teeth and gum infections, congestion, tuberculosis, stomach, kidney, and lung problems, and urinary tract infections.  It has also been used as an antidepressant, an antidote for spider and snake bites, as well as an aphrodisiac to cure impotency.

Fun Fact III:  Some Middle Eastern cultures serve “gahwa,” a strong cardamom-based coffee, as a daily requirement of hospitality.

  • anti-cancer (phytonutrients)
  • digestion-boosting
  • anti-bacterial
  • anti-nausea
  • cardio-protective (phytonutrients increase blood circulation)

 

What does it contain/provide?

  • blood-clot preventing components
  • high flavonoid levels
  • fiber
  • essential minerals
  • manganese (aids in cellular metabolism — tissues can make fuel to function)
  • volatile oils (help with gastrointestinal disorders)

 

What do I put it in?

  • fudge
  • coffee
  • lentil soups and stews
  • mix with extra-virgin olive oil, and coat on cauliflower — then roast cauliflower until tender and slightly browned
  • mix with lemon juice for a chicken flavoring

 

Hot Tips:

  • If you want a stronger flavor, buy the pods.  Smash the pods, remove the seeds, grind the seeds with a mortar and pestle (or spice mill) into a fine powder, and add to the dish.
  • Recipe: black/green tea, cardamom, anise, cinnamon, black peppercorns
